US Citizen Trying to Register Used Bike in Italy

Non-EU citizen planning a two month motorcycle trip from Italy to Scotland. There is much conflicting information as to the ability of a foreigner to register a used bike in Italy. The consulate in Los Angeles tells me I can do it but my friends in Italy say it's not possible due to ACI. I need to inform my Italian friends how I am planning on registering it, ie., is there a certain loophole or agency I need to contact? It seems there's more headache to purchasing a used bike and registering it than there is with a new one. Can I register a used bike in my name in Italy?

This is indeed headache stuff! Your Embassy in the EU might know for sure. Phone them.

Have you thought about putting the bike in an EU friend's name and then borrowing it? Might be simpler....

Best wishes

bad news

Hello William,
I just had a look through a few Italian websites and I found out that if a foreigner wants to BUY AND REGISTER a vehicle in Italy he needs to have the Italian residence.
the link is here: Ministero dei Trasporti it is in Italian (question number 6), it comes from the Ministero dei Trasporti Italiani so it is official.
I think it refers only to non EU though but I am not sure.
Best regards.
