No carnet a problem in SE Asia?

I've got a long post in the regional forum, if you're willing to check it out:

http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...919#post404747

I've got several planning questions in there, but the short version is I'm trying to ship my bike from Mumbai to Singapore, and then ride it through Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and through China to Hong Kong. Any recommendations or suggestions for the bike paperwork would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Christian

Thailand does not require a carnet. I believe Cambodia and Laos also do not, means you get another temporary import permit. Note, that you may very well be able to use the carnet in many countries, if you have it, but that's different from requiring it. This often leads to confusion.

Malaysia officially requires a carnet, but on land borders seems to be very relaxed about it. Indonesia basically requires a carnet, hard to enter without it.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
