(Urgent) Paraguay import paperwork!

Hi folks,
Does anybody have any up-to-date info on the import documents for Paraguay? We crossed the border from Argentina via Brasil today, stamped our passports but gave no import paperwork for our motorcycles, we insisted we needed something but the top customs guy said there is no such thing and in the end started to get a bit p*ssed with us so we cut and run!!
We're in Ciudad del Este for 48 hours so have time to sort something if anybody has any info.
There's no problem for us if we don't NEED any stamp/docs but we want to avoid problems at checkpoints and when we leave Paraguay in approx one months time.
I've found a few posts where people have gone to another city and managed to get the correct paperwork but it isn't clear if they were asked for it at the exit border or whilst on the road.

Cheers

I exited in the north back to Brazil and had to search out both police (for passport stamp) and aduana on my own. No one checked. The aduana was in a giant, marble-floored building on the main highway, while the police were napping behind protective bars on a side street. This makes sense when you consider that Paraguay is a smuggler and drug transhipment heaven, not known for its alert and competent police force.

I saw no police checkpoints in Paraguay, but whether that's normal or not I can't say. I did get legal temporary import papers in CdE, although I had to search out the aduana there, too. Always seems worthwhile to do it right when offered the opportunity.

Hope that's helpful. I liked Paraguay, although it lacks the big ticket sights of neighboring countries.

Thanks Mark,
Can you remember where the aduana office is? The guy who wouldn't help us came out of a small "office" in the centre of the carrageway right at passport control. The really helpful Tourist Infomation guy did all the talking for us and we explained to him that we have never not had paperwork for the motos in any other country in the world! but the customs guy was having none of it (with a smirk on his face!!!)

I went up a small hill behind the offices at the point of entry (a right turn heading into Paraguay), into a two story building full of offices. Finding the right guy involved some asking around, and he was in an office upstairs and to the right. If I were you, I'd try again but ask non-officials (police, taxi drivers, etc.) for the aduana offices.

There was construction underway when I was there, so probably it's all different now. Good luck.

Heads up.

OK everybody, good news :D
We went to the offices around the back of the immigration today (which Mark recommended, thanks mate), we walked up a hill and at the top is a large 2 storey office building that is the customs offices, open Monday - Friday only.
In the front door and straight up the stairs there is a nice big sign and top of the list is Tiempo de Tramite!
10 mins later we had the temporary import document (he wanted to see ownership papers and IDP and passport).
I would recommend if you cross at Ciudad Del Este just going into imigration to get your passport stamped then ride away from the office, take the FIRST right following the building round and ride up the hill behind the office you have just been in, park up outside (security everywhere) and you'll be sorted straightaway.
Don't even think about trying to get your Tempo docs at the actual crossing point, the main guy's is a fool and unwilling to help, he is quite happy for you to ride off into Paraguay without the correct paperwork and suffer the consequences, nice attitude from an offical!

Very excited to hear that my memory is not as riddled with misinformation as it sometimes seems! Enjoy your trip.

That's good to hear everything was ok. As I told you guys, I was 15 min from the border and could easily help you on that, I 've filled hundreds of times that form, most of the times I fill the form and even sign asthe ownership of the bike.

If you need some help on the border again you got my number ok

Safe journey
