UK/US dual nationality - Which passport for where?
 

I have dual nationality through my parents, but have lived in the UK most of my life, and consider myslef pretty much English. The only think I ever used my US passport for in the past was to get in the shorter line going into the US, and of course staying ther problem-free.

It occurs to me now that if I take it with me when I leave in April, I may get visas for some countries easier (heading east from London, thru Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, China, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Loas and on and on to Oz though not planned the route yet). Does anybody know of the above listed countries which would be advantageous to show my US passport, and if there are any that I should keep schtum about my US citizenship...?

If I leave one country on my UK passport, and then try to enter the next on my US passport, will they not wonder why I don't have an exit stamp from the last country...? And be suspicious or something if I show it to them in my UK passport....?

If I get stopped by the cops who want to see my passport, say in Pakistan, but my UK passport (the one which will have the Pakistan visa in it) is off with the Indian consulate having my Indian visa sorted, should I show my US passport (or duplicate UK passport if I manage to get one..)? Neither of these would have a valid Pak visa in them...

Or should I get the Indian visa in the "second" UK pasport, and always carry the one with me that has the Pak visa in it.

Pakistan is just an example of course. Could be any country.

Showng passport No 2 when No1 is off getting stamp/s.. If No2 has the visa .. then I'd not show No 1. It just confuses them. If they are after proof of identity then an International Drivers permit will doi that - has a photo, stamps, and some writing they should be able to understand.

The US passport .. not as usefull as the UK one. Think about what country has the worst reputation out of the two. Sorry .. it is reputation, present .. not past nor money spent nor anything but reputation. That would be my take on it. If you want to give the UK one a rest .. US one should be good in Thailand, OZ, NZ .. Ok in India ..

I've discovered that Mongolia lets me in for 3 months without any visa requirement, so there's one plus already.... anyone know of any others?
