UK Customs duty

My Triumph Bonneville arrived into Tilbury docks this week.
After 14 months on the road from Canada to Argentina.
I'm from the uk - but bought the bike up in Seattle.

I have just recieved the breakdown of import charges I'm being asked to pay up. It is all beginning to add up. As a student I'm used to financial woes but this is gonna be hurt for a while.

I was wondering if anyones knows anyway of avoiding the import tax for her magisty - possibly with the notice 999 form C104A - with proof that you have owned the vehicle for more than 12 months.

I've spent all morning speaking with customs and exise, and managed to locate the commodity code for motorcycles being 8711400000 (theres 86000 codes)

Theres also the C285 form - Repayments and revisions.
I was wondering how safe it would be to pay the duties, get my bike and try to claim it back afterwards.
Has anyone used this? And fought and won against the system?
(It's just that I'll have to pay for customs storage if I was to run the C104A forms as my bike came into port this week)

I'm sure it makes sense to somebody? right?

Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated.

Tommym,

I have been looking into this for my own reasons. I plan to move to the UK, with my bike, overland, so in theory a Carnet is not going to help me as I don't intend to return with the bike.

Anyways, thats not your problem.

At this stage, all I know is this,

1. Value of bike is converted to sterling.
2. Duty rate ( less than 1.0) is appalied Value of bike in sterling.
3. Duty rate is then added to Value of bike ( Value + D.Rate)
4. VAT % x ( Value + D.Rate) = Import Cost
5. After to pay this then you need to fill out HMRC form C & E 386 - this form is issued by HMRC for a vehicle of any age personally imported from outside the EU.
6. The go directly to something called the Driver & Vehicle Licencing Agency and register your bike ( 38 pounds ).

You probably know this stuff already....but if you learn anything else, please let me know...I will be following your footsteps this year..

Basically this is exactly the same numbering system as the UK. I assume to ensure easy trade in Europe, it is exactly the same system.

It explains how the numbering system works and how to get your number.

Step 1 - Browse the Taric Code find your product.
Section 17
Chapter 87
sub section 8711 - Motorcycles
..and continue until you get your code.

Hope that helps.
For some reason you have to pay to see the UK codes.

What have you found out about what you need i'm going from London to cape town and don't know what i need to export my Toyota let me know what you find and the route that you are going to go
