U.S. Drivers, Venezuelan Bikes, stuck in Argentina
 

Here's a puzzle...

We entered Argentina after checking our paperwork out with the Argentinian embassy in Brasilia and with the officials at the border. They both assured us that we didn't need bike insurance to drive through Argentina. Then at Formosa, we were stopped by the police who demanded insurance papers. We were allowed to enter the city to solve this problem but no company here will insure our bikes. I'm assuming we will need this at every police stop here in Argentina and later in Chile.

Any advice most welcome...

Fake something at an internet cafe, take it to a print shop with nice paper and colour laser printers, then laminate/stamp/dirty it up as appropriate. Have only been asked for insurance once in Argentina (using a mining company's private road) and a hostel card did the trick then. Naturally, I have no personal experience with forging documents...

following up to my own question...

It was quite simple. Insurence for motorcycles is available for about $7 US a month at several different insurence companies. They may tell you there is a mandatory six month contract in which you can arrange to pay in instalments for the months that you need. Evidently we needed this upon entering but it was no where available at the border, only at the first town we drove into (Formosa).

thanks for the help, and James we'll try your suggestion and forge some documents on the computer, just for the hell of it - not that you'd be much help there.
