insurance South America

have sent a bunch of emails into the world, but hardly get replies from insurance companies in South America....
Got a qoute from a Dutch company, 900USD for 6 months per bike, only 3rd party liability... yeah right!

I'm looking for those 15USD/month insurances everybody seems to have (-had) but cannot find them! (same problem I always have with these 15 euro airplane tickets people talk about...?)

Asked for a qoute at Motorcycle express, but does anyone have good contact details and specs on other companies? Please post with details!

For the countries that require it, just buy at the border. It is very rarely more than 15USD per month.

For Argentina you can get it in Department Stores (or buy it in Chile before you cross the border) Ripleys stores for example.

Colombia is a PITA, but I have posted here somewhere, where to get it in Bogota and other cities (30USD/month).

Peru, another PITA, but again I Posted where to get it. If you want I will dig out the info.

FWIW, apart from the fact that motorcycle express are *expensive*, bear in mind .... would you want and American solicitor/lawyer handling an insurance case for you in Latin America ????? :-)

Colombia and Mercosur

Check one of my posts from about 2 years ago I did a write up on Colombian insurance...if nothing has changed it should be spot on...but do get it for sure in Columbia, they'll be asking you for it..

You can also get a Mercosur policy for many of the the southern South American countries...one policy for all.

Shop around when you get there..ask other riders...it should end up being less than a buck a day...anything else is stupid gringo price..

got a quote now for most countries down there (not colombia, euador and Peru, and the northern stuff ;-)) for rougly 30USD/month/bike.

But when I ask people ,they all state to have had insurance for half that, which would be nice...
So: you all out there on affordable insurance, post some links, contact persons and prices please ;-)
It will contribute to a better world for us all!

Hi Guys, I've just bought 6mths Mercusor bike insurance for Arg., Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru in BA for 60 pesos a month on the advice of Sandra at Dakar Motos. The company is:

ATM
Florida 833
floor 2
Bs.As.

tel. 810-3456-286

It's a normal company and I'm sure that Sandra will sort it for you for a small recompense. Ride safe.

Hi Mike,

Now we're talking! That is about 15USD per month, per bike.
Does she also have an email address?

Hey Mike,

Seems they can only issue the Argentinian insurance online, for the whole of S-A I'll need to be there.... how did you arrange it?

As I flew the bike into BA I needed 3rd party insurance for the bike to get it through customs which is normal, Sandra arranged this for me. After picking up the bike from the airport with Sandra's help I went to the main ATM office in downtown BA on my own, what a brave boy and upgraded it. If you are coming in from the north by road and enter the area in say Peru, I would imagine therefore that the same company that issues the Peruvian insurance, in Peru, should be able to issue one for the Mercusor region. When I last did that I used the address on my Mex insurance for that but others may work. Keep on trying would be my advice, along with ride safe.

(1035) Capital Federal
Tel/fax 0054 11 4326-3647/2611

Took one week to get a 2 1/2 month certificate for ~55,- €.

The lady speaks german as well. Insurance certificate is a well known German company.
