Through Turkey with non-European plates: caret du passage needed??

I plan to drive through Turkey, en route from Syria to Europe, with non-European licence plates. I’ve been receiving conflicting accounts of whether or not, in this case, a carnet du passage is needed for Turkey. I’d be glad to hear from anyone who’s driven through Turkey in a vehicle not registered in Europe. Was a carnet needed? If so, perhaps a 'temporary carnet' can be obtained at the border??

Just rode through the Southern most border from Alexandroupoli, Greece into Istanbul last week with a California license plate. All I had to show was the motorcycle title, green card insurance, and my passport. No carnet necessary.

I past trough Turkey on a Australian registered bike in July this year. We needed to get insurance at the border 3 months for 10 lira.Green card for Europe is not valid for Turkey. They did want to see the Carnet but the bike gets stamped into the passport. You may be OK without the Carnet as long as you have the rest of the paperwork.

Due to family problems I had to leave Turkey for 2 weeks with the bike in lockup at the custom house in Anatalia and 2 hours of paperwork to be filled out and stamped. Without Customs OK and another stamp in your passport there is no way you get out of the country.
I know its not what you asked but just so you know.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
