Temporary insurance in Bogota, Colombia

After many attempts at getting mandatory insurance for less than a year, we were finally successful. Everyone told us that it was only sold for a year, and the cost was approx $130. As I was only going to be in Colombia for a month, this was just a bit expensive. Following is the way to get insurance for the minimum 3 months, at a cost of approx $35.

The company that sells obligatory insurance (called SOAT) is Seguros Suramericana. The office that you want to go to is located at Carrera 10, #28-49, Edificio (building) Davivienda, Tower A, 16th floor. Telephone is 678-3800. Hours are 7:30 to 12:30 and 1:30 to 5:30. Even here, nobody knew the procedure, but after insisting that it is possible they were finally able to confirm. The person that I dealt with was Diego Saunaria. I don´t think he speaks English, but don´t know.

The documents that you will need are your title and the import permissions from DIAN (customs). The cost is approximately 70,000 pesos and they only accept cash.

If you are thinking of going without insurance, a friend of mine has been stopped by the police 5 times in the past week and asked for it every time.

Could you post the name of the documents needed to apply for this insurance? I am sure that if you look in another city this info will be valuable.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
