Temporary Import Permit South Africa

Hi guys :helpsmilie:

We're travelling overland from the UK to South Africa next year. We're South Africans, but the vehicle we're borrowing is UK-registered. We have two options i.t.o. carnets:

* The RAC in the UK. Can issue for all the countries, but 800% deposit required for Egypt.
* The AA in South Africa. Can issue for all countries, excluding South Africa (since we're South African residents). Only 200% deposit required for Egypt carnet, so it's the preferred choice.

Only problem is - we will be without a carnet for South Africa... What will be the procedure/requirements at the border post (Vioolsdrift - Nam/SA)? Will we be able to get a Temporary Import Permit upon arrival or will we need to pay full import duty?

Also, what's the cost of these type of TIP's?

PS: we're not planning on importing the vehicle permanently - the original owner is planning on driving it back to the UK.

Thanks for reading,
Pieter

I believe you can.

See S A H C :: Customs & Excise: Temporary Admission of Motor Vehicles :: .

They say you need to leave a "temporary cash deposit" No idea how much. I would suggest you contact customs.qry.cc@sars.gov.za so they can advise on the cost. This is possible in all other countries dont see why not SA.

Are you able to get a carnet through the AA in SA? I am planning a trip from London to SA (Im a saffa too) in late 2010.

Question: Are you going West or East route? I am going to go West, and am inclined to not get a carnet at all. It seems that its not required for the west route. Just get a TIP at some of the borders.
Even the AA in SA says a carnet is only compulsory in Egypt Kenya and Uganda.

Definitely, you can. I rode a Kenyan bike to Cape Town. No carne du passage, I paid something but it was unexpensive at all, perhaps because the bike was 15 years old (R80 G/S BMW)

When I entered SA by Zimbabwe border, they checked properly the paperwork (it is a heavy duty border), but from SA I came into Bostwana really easy and I got into Namibia from Bostwana even easier. When I crossed the Namibia/SA border was much more easy than from Zimbabwe.

I guess those 3 countries (SA, Bostwana and Namibia) make some kind of cooperation supraregion, so if you get Nambia from Angola or Zambia (no carnet required) will be very easy to go into SA. But, anyway, even coming from Zimbabwe it is not difficult and the whole proccedure took me 30 minutes.

From Nairobi to Cape Town. A fantastic trip on a BMW Motorcycle across Africa
