Insurance, Green Card, RTW

Sorry if these questions have been asked a dozen times, I have searched for a couple of hours and I'm still a little confused.
I have an Australian bike that, because it's registered, has compulsery TP insurance. Is this all I need to ride RTW through Asia & Europe? I understand I'll need a green card when I get to Turkey, is a green card an insurance certificate in it's own right?

Thanks heaps, I'm soaking up loads from all the info thats already posted.

Hi
About 3 days ago I got my Green Card from Turkey in Ipsala border (Greece-Turkey Border) from İsvicre Sigorta (this is the name of the insurance comp. and situated in free shop zone). Cost me 10 British Pounds (22.5 YTL). It is only valid in Turkey.

Hope this will help you.

Think you will find that insurance is only valid in Australia.

What is an " insurance certificate" ? The 'green card' says you have the minimum insurance required for the countries it is valid for. Your actual insurance may cover more than the minimum. The insurance 'policy' will state in legalise what the insurance is 'good' for.

Thanks. I get the impression from most posts (and you) that insurance is something that can be bought at the border of most countries that require it. I can imagine what most people would say in the UK if I phoned up asking for cover on an Australian bike in Turkey.
Had a glance at your web site, looks like you're in for a good trip. I raced in Qatar 18 months ago and loved it. Not alot there apart from sand though.

Thanks Frank. I have no insurance apart from in Oz, so I plan to be legal by using the green card.

Are there insurance companies out there that will insure third party for far flung coutries?

Your Aussie insurance is only valid in Oz. When i arrived in Turkey i wasn't asked for insurance so i didn't buy any (it's a form of gambling anyway). I crossed into Greece and tried to buy some at the border on the Greek side and was told that Greek insurance companies no longer sell to foreigners. I managed to avoid the cops through most of Europe until i was able to buy green card insurance from ADAC in Germany, the only place i could find that would insure an Aussie registered bike in Europe. You have to turn up in person though.

My advice would be to buy temporary insurance at the Turkish border on the way in, then get the green card on Turkish / Greece border on the way out.

See my post below for more info

Thumbs up

Excellent advice, Matt!

I obtained my GC in 1988 at the AA in Izmir, TR, and in the centre of Venezia, Italy. I just found the insurance certificate issued by SARA assicurazioni spa, which is the insurance of the Italian AA.

My guess is that the best bet are each country's AA.

For those who meet with unknowing ADAC employees ask for "Grenzverkehr-Versicherung". This is what I got for my French bike while I'm in Germany. The GC, however, is only valid in the EU, CH and Scandinavia, not even in ANDorra!

This (below) is what I was looking for! Excelent advice from all though, so much experience at my finger tips I feel like I've been there already! No need to go myself now so I might just buy a big new TV, stay home, and get fat.

A green card is NOT an insurance, but a proof for you having insurance. in case of an accident the green card association will pay for any claims against you and then try to get the money back from your insurer. if it turns out you are not actually covered they'll sue YOU (happened to a friend of mine).

our 3rd party insurance in Aus is useless anywhere else. It is really annoying that we have to pay it while out of Aus to keep our registration alive and legal so to speak. You can buy 3rd party easy in Malaysia, and at the border going into thailand. Dont worry about any for Cambodia, Laos or Burma. Or Bangladesh India, Pakistan or Iran. Buy it at the border in Turkey. But negotiate the price....there are a lot of touts who try and do it for you at a huge profit. The European green card is available by internet from the guy who advertises on the HU site. Stefan Knopf of Knopftours. It is available...in fact forced upon you... at the border in Serbia and Bulgaria. Never had any in England....no one would sell it to us, so we went without....as do more than half the locals so the police told us.
