South America, leaving country w/o vehicle
 

Hi all,
My question is not the new one on this forum but I couldn’t find any exact answer about leaving the motorbike somewhere in the foreign country and fly out for certain period and than come back to continue journey. All answers are either guessing type or “he said that she said that they said”.
I’m planning for next year to ship my motorbike across to USA and hit Panamerican Highway all the way down to Argentina. As I work on 6 weeks on/off basis I have to arrange whole trip in couple of legs.
First leg is going to leave me in South California and according to USA customs there shouldn’t be a problem to fly out of the Sates leaving the motorbike for 6 weeks there. Just got an answer from CBP and they say as long as the bike gets exported within one year no any problem. So first leg is sorted out.
I reckon that second leg would probably leave me somewhere in Peru.
Question is, can I leave that country without the vehicle?
Actually, does anybody know exactly what countries along the route won’t give you any hassle while leaving the country w/o vehicle you came with.
I’ll arrange not to exceed some 80 days period in any of countries along the route so it should be inside some legal frames.
Would it be any help and benefit to have Carnet de Passage despite it’s not required anywhere along planned route?
If somebody has recent experience about this pls. drop me a line.
By the way I can’t afford getting to the airport “to try to get out of country” as missed flight could easily put me out of the job. Well, at least in that case I would sort out described problem :mchappy:

rosho, call the Peruvian embassy and so on ........it might be a good idea to try to get the answer in writing..........

The only problem is with countries that stamp your vehicle in your passport. Most in Central America do. I do not have my passport with me, but most definitely Argentina, Chile, and Peru do not. I believe Uruguay and Ecuador do not. I have not been to the other countries. Last I knew, you can get a years time for your vehicle in Uruguay.

It's been suggested elsewhere: obtain a duplicate passport and use that one to travel without the bike.
This assumes that "joined up computers" don't catch up with you anyway.

Okay, i just checked my passport. All within one year: In C.America and Mexico, only Honduras stamped the bike into my passport, the rest were only paperwork. I left my bike in Colombia for 5 months, returned and left the country. If i had been stopped, there would of been a problem. Also, Aduana refused to cancel my permit, stating the bike was now the property of the Colombian Gov't, as stated on the form. I recently left my bike in Ecuador, and unless i get the permit renewed in time, will encounter the same problem when i return, but left the country without the bike. Neither Colombia or Ecuador stamp the bike into the passport.
