South America Bike Insurance for non Americans/Canadians

Hi all,

I'm doing a trip across South America and I'm trying to find bike insurance. I've only found motorcycle express that covers only USA and Canadians. I'm a New Zealander so no luck there.

I've looked across the Hubb (and internet) and have had little to no success.

I know people say don't get insurance, but I'm only looking for theft insurance, I know the risks are small if you look after the bike but given the start up costs I'd be guttered if the bike got stolen and that was the end of the trip.

Any ideas? Otherwise, has anyone had luck as a traveller with a foreign bike getting comprehensive cover in specific countries such as Argentina/Chile ?

Cheers

Reece

I am sorry ,I really can't help you with info about bike theft insurance but I am wondering how much such a thing would cost for a trip of the length you are considering presumably on your used bike brought in from NZ. A few thousand dollars maybe? How much money is it going to take to ship your NZ bike over and all the additional fee for customs ( as well as time consumed in getting the bike through customs ) and so on? - a few thousand more? How much is the bike worth now ? Would it make more sense to consider buying a suitable used bike once you arrive this side of the Pacific and selling or abandoning it at the end of trip? The money not spent on shipment and theft insurance might be more than the value of the NZ bike .
Theft insurance is completely an optional choice whereas public liability insurance is compulsory in many jurisdictions, better apply your money to that

Hi Reece

I contacted Motorcycle Express and in fact they do cover non-north americans - I'm British and they were happy to quote for me.
