South africa paperwork

What paperwork is needed to travel to south africa from USA. ? I'll be renting a bike so paperwork for me only. Thank You for your time!

Own bike?

All you will need is your license, Yellow Card, CDP (if own bike)

Thats about it! Just rode through there myself and wasn't asked for any of the above but better to be on the safe side.

Cheers

International drivers license, did get stopped by police several times in road blocks/checks and it was the prefered piece of paperwork.

Comesa Yellow Card - not required for SA

I dont think a Comesa Yellow Card is required / valid for South Africa.

My understanding is that third party vehicle insurance is not required in SA as there is a fuel levy contribution to the Road Accident Fund. The Fund is supposed to pay out on any third party claims.

Auto Insurance | Car Insurance South Africa

Either way, shouldnt be a problem if you are only renting, as any third party insurance requirements would be picked up by the rental company.

cheers

Go back to the same AAA office. Ask them to show you a blank International Driving Permit (for "Europe"). Note the long list of countries printed inside includes South Africa, and only a few of the countries listed are in "Europe." Note that the IDP is in the following languages: English, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, German, Spanish, Swedish. Arabic, etc. are not "European" languages.
In other words, it will be helpful to educate the local AAA staff that the "Europe" IDP is just a shorthand term somebody thought up, thoughtlessly. You can actually use the "Europe" IDP anywhere in the world, including c. and s. america. The AAA website, International Driving Permits, says "Valid in over 150 countries..." Have a great ride in ZA!

The bike hire company asked for the international/European license.
They covered all of the insurance for the other countries I visited as well, but NOT breakdown outside ZA. So if they arrange paperwork into another country, check this one.
