South Africa - Customs refuse to stamp my carnet out!

Hi

Hope someone in here is able to help me out a bit.

Been travelling down the West coast of Africa to Cape Town.

First time I used my carnet was in Angola!

Arrived to Namibia, got the Carnet stamp in at the border, there after I travelled through Namibia, Botswana down to South Africa without any more stamps on the Carnet other than the Namibian entry stamp.

Now shipping the bike to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Meanwhile customs in Durban refuse to stamp me out of South Africa. They state it is because of the missing exit stamp from Namibia.

I was told by the customs in Namibia that I only needed one page on the Carnet for the three countries consisting of (Namibia, Botswana and South Africa).

I have heard the same from all other travellers.

Have anybody tried the same? I am looking after some documentation on the Internet that I can show them.

Cheers

Unless things have changed in the last 3 years Namibia, Botswana and South Africa are in an organisation like a mini EU and whilst you need your passport stamped in and out of each country, the carnet is stamped in by the country through which you enter the organisation and out only by the country that you leave from. In fact, I did the same as you are now trying to do. I would google the organisation, it should all be there. Ride safe.

South Africa - Customs refuse to stamp my carnet out!

Sorry guys for the late answer!

This might become useful to others.

I finally got the bike out of South Africa after 3 weeks or so struggling with the customs. The shipping company did not know what to do about it. First when I contacted the Automobile Organization for South Africa, things started to happen and then it then went fast. Things was cleared in matter of a couple of days.
I was told that normally there are no problems with the customs in Cape Town, but it can be different with Durban.

But the company and the beer in Cape Town are awesome ;oP

my carnet expired while i was in namibia, so rather than cross into SA with an expired carnet, i had it stamped OUT of namibia, then got SA customs to give me a temp. import document.

however - the shipping agent says they need a valid carnet, and RACQ (issuing body) say australian customs need the carnet to be valid until the bike clears customs in australia.

1. whats the best shipping agent in cape town (or durban)
2. AASA is in jo'burg - long way from cape town. do i have to do the substitution form to get the carnet extended? i thought i just needed a stamp on the cover of the carnet
3. any other ideas? anyone shipped out WITHOUT using the carnet at all?

thanks
d
