Source for vehicle insurance - fire, theft, etc. NOT liabili

From a recent post on the Sahara Forum:

Quote:
"Alexander Forbes Insureance Agency (http://www.afiaws.com/) based in London will insure vehicles for anywhere in the world - they normally do diplomatic and expat insurance but will do private trips.

I sold my old banger last year and have a 1 year old Landy which I intend to do a 4 month trip round West Africa in from Nov. I'm more concerned with a complete write-off or theft/fire than little dents which is why I've been after insurance. These guys are very efficient and I had an answer in two hours after filling in the forms on their website.

They only give premiums for 12 months but if I cancel the policy after the trip (4 months) they would only charge 45% of the premium (that means you get 65% back but this is in the event of no claims). They can do insurance for one or any driver and accepted "no claims bonus" from my current insurer.

Hopefully this will save you the 50 phone calls and emails I've had to send in the last 4 months. Cheers Mike"
I will write to them and see how they feel about motorcycles!

Any response from them?

Sounds like a combination of ADAC for liability and this company for the rest might be a cost-saver.

Hi Michael

Actually, there was quite a lot of correspondence on this topic, but I'll save you time and give you the final summary from our Links page:

Quote:
"Alexander Forbes Insurance Agency Ltd (www.AFIAWS.com) can arrange loss/damage vehicle insurance in every country outside of the USA and Canada. Third party liability does need to be arranged locally to comply with the local laws of the countries you are visiting."

Slight catch: "... if travellers wish to contact us for insurance they would ideally need to be using their motorcycle in combination with a motor vehicle on their trip. The combined motorcycle and motor vehicle policy is more attractive to our underwriters and travellers would find it easier to get cover."

So, if you're travelling with a 4WD, (or you're taking along a car on your motorcycle trip), contact Stephen Hodson, Marketing Manager. Don't forget to tell him how you found them.
For the correspondence, see this post:

Sorry, Michael, I know you've been trying to find a reasonably priced comprehensive vehicle insurance policy, and I was quite pleased to see the original posting, but it looks like it will be of assistance only for our 4WD friends.

Susan

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
