Shipping UK to US. Do I really need a US broker too or can I do it???

I’m in the process of booking my bike on the R/O R/O ship from Southampton to New York & due to the 'new 10+2 rules' I also need to employ an agent in America apparently prior to the bike departing. Most have quoted about $270 to assist me in clearing Customs.
My question is, as I will be applying for the ‘non resident temporary importation approval letter’ myself and want to clear the bike through Customs myself too (if possible) do I need to spend the $270 to engage the services of a broker?
Any assistance appreciated, I’m getting tangled up in procedure.

I do not know any of the new laws but I do not think they can make you use any company. But you will have to do the paper work. You may want to look in to shipping to Canada and ride in to the USA. It was cheaper to ship out of Canada to the UK than the USA to the UK last year.

One trick is to buy a bike in the USA and ship it back selling it at home and paying for the bike and shipping almost a free trip.

I have the same question but regarding using Wallenius Wilhelmsen RO/RO from NY to Europe. They do recommend a freight forwarder but I'd rather save the expense. They pointed me to AESDirect - True Innovation In Export Automation , saying that all customs must be done online. If I can't do that, I have to use an agent.

So I set up an account with AES (my dad owns a trucking company so this isn't totally foreign to me) and am browsing through their instructions now. If I get overwhelmed I might just bite the bullet and contact one of WW's recommended freight forwarders.

If anyone has done the customs under the new rules, I'd love to get any pointers.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
