shipping bike from cali to thailand (for holiday) then to oz

hi guys.

like the header says, i'm taking an extended vacation in thailand (currently i'm living in san francisco) and i'd like to take my ktm 950 with me. i wondered if anyone here had shipped a bike from the states to thailand?

my situation's complicated slightly by the fact that i'm not coming back to the usa. i'm currently sorting out a new job in oz (no details established yet) but by mid february i'll be leaving thailand for oz (prob either melbourne or sydney) and i'll need to arrange for the bike to be shipped to and re-registered there.

have any of you guys been through any of this? how complex will obtaining "tourist paperwork for my bike in thailand be?

how about import process/costs/duty for australia?

any help much appreciated. if i don't get moving on this soon i'll just have to sell the bike and buy another one in oz.

thanks in advance,
alan latham.

Hi and welcome to HUBB.

For the Thai import procedures use the Search function. Apparently it's quite easy at Bangkok airport.

For Oz click on the link "Carnet de Passage" in the menu on the left. There are links to the relevant Oz Govt. web sites. You should arrange the importation beforehand. Make sure your bike model exists in Oz or it may be impossible.

Good luck.

Hi Alan, unless you have a pre-arranged clearance permit from Australia, don't do it. You'll have your bike impounded. I've done it before on a vintage bike into Oz and it was no problem but as a Brit and Ozzie resident it was relatively easy, if you are a non-resident, you will need a carnet I think and will need to re-export within 6 months. Thailand will only give you as a tourist 29 days, but this is pretty easy as they do not require a carnet, but you must move the bike out of the country in 29 days.

Hope this helps.....
