selling a bike with a carnet in Africa... whats the risk

Hello all,
Im doing a trans africa next year on a South African Carnet and bike. Believe it or not, the securoty deposit for an SA Carnet on my 1985 XT 600 cost all of R500.00 (about $80.00)! Now, im thinking its going to be way cheaper to sell whats left of my dear bike in Kenya (or somewhere in that area) than to ship the old beast back home.
So, besides losing the R500.00 deposit, is there anything else that will happen to me when i return home minus bike?

Thanks, jim

The only people that can really answer that is the people that issue the carnet. But be aware that the norm in countries that do this type of carnet guarantee (instead of requiring you to have the full amount on deposit in the bank) is that they then come after you to collect for the full amount.

so I would definitely ask them what are the full terms and conditions - and there is no risk - you SHOULD be asking that question.

Hi Grant,

Sorry, but i dont understand your last sentence:
"...and there is no risk - you SHOULD be asking that question."

Thanks again for a brilliant site!
