SE Asia to UK - getting a carnet

Hi. I planning to buy a bike in Thailand, and ride home through Pakistan/India/Iran etc. Is it possible to get a Carnet out in Thailand? Would it still be the 500% to get into Iran, as listed on the RAC website? What other problems might there be? Is my drivers licence applicable in Burma?

Any help much appreciated

Alex

I wouldn't get too worried about whether your driving licence will work in Burma!

As for the carnet issue - I have certainly seen carnets being DHL'd out to people (the French couple referred to in the thread above had theirs sent from France after arranging it through the French Embassy in Bangkok) but I am not sure how a carnet would work with a (presumably) Thai-registered bike. Maybe you need to speak to the Thai equivalent of the AA/RAC?

Good luck!

That's how it would usually work: a Carnet for a Thai-registered vehicle could [only] be obtained from the FIA/ AIT-affiliated national automobile association:

Royal Automobile Association of Thailand (RAAT)

Address
151 Rachadapisek Road

Jatujak
Bangkok 10900

Phone
(66 2) 939 57 70

(66 2) 512 09 05

(From U.S., dial "011" for all international calls)

Fax(66 2) 511 22 30E-mailpraserta@pacific.net.thmotorsport@raat.or.thWeb:: RAAT :: ÃÒªÂҹ¹µìÊÁÒ¤ÁáË觻ÃÐà·È ä·Â ã¹¾ÃкÃÁÃÒªÙ»¶ÑÁÀì

This website is in Thai only; the Google Thai-English translator is currently not working for this website.

This also assumes the Thai club/ RAAT issues Carnets. Some national clubs do not. You might also check directly with the RAC Carnet office

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
