Registration and Insurance in Argentina/Chile

Hi. I am going to take my bike to Argentina and Chile, from Sydney for a couple of months to tour.

This is the first time I have done this and have some basic questions to ask. I hope someone can help:

Insurance: What type of insurance do I need? Do I have to buy it in Sydney or in Argentina?
Registration: Can I ride in Argentina and Chile on an Australian registered bike?

That's all. Thanks.

Max

Insurance: in the third world such things tend to be somewhat illusory. In other words, it is often not available, especially to foreigners, and if it is it's probably just a way for someone to line their pockets. The insurance you pay for isn't worth the paper it's writen on.
Argentina is fairly advanced - you MAY be able to get insurance there - but we tried for a whole day (Susan was in one of her paranoid moods) and got nowhere. In fact the people we talked to thought we were crazy. Insurance? Huh? Why?

You are extremely unlikely to be able to get overseas insurance in Oz. (That holds for any country - leave the country your insurance is invalid, with the exceptions of some neighboring countries - e.g. all Europe (as long as your policy is standard and foreign cover is ON), Canada/USA and a few others.

Registration: Absolutely no problem anywhere in the world. No country requires you to register your bike locally. Just have several copies of your Aussie rego. And drivers licence.

Have fun! Let us know how you do!

Dear Friend,

If you´re feeling paranoid or run into a jam you can contact the guy below for some Argentine liability insurance.

ROBERTO JORGE ARTURI
-Asesor de Seguros-

Adr: Hualfin 1032, 6 piso B (1424), Cap. Fed.

Tel: (+541) 4328-9109
4328-1708
4328-9782
4328-6613
and there´s more:

(+541) 4322-7981
4322-7984

-he´s a freelance insurance agent, a real pirate, knows his way around, he can get you any insurance you want. I think he would even insure the Titanic. As I said previously, you don´t want to find out who the hell is gonna pay for damage, but what is a fact is that you will get nice, good looking insurance papers which are valid. Cost should be no more than aprox. 20 USD a month. Minimum coverage is 6 months, but you pay per month. My advice is to just pay once so you get all the papers and then don´t pay anymore. (Well, I guess I´m a pirate as well.)

Liability insurance in Argentina is called "Seguro contra terceros no transportados"

Whatever you do, make sure you have something to show the cops, even if its your foreign (not valid) insurance, preferably in a foreign language. They do stop you sometimes.

Good luck,

Gonzalo
Argentine.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
