Riding Africa with transit numberplate

Hi. My friend bought a motorbike in Germany. He is a Russian citizen. His plan is a riding via Tunis, Algeria, Niger, Mauri, Mali and Morocco by this motorcycle. Can he ride with German transit numberplate during the valid period? Can he get back in EU from Moroco?

Alex

In Africa transit numberplate are no problem, nobody will notice even if the valid period has expired.

Have a safe trip

He can ride it within the EU, only Italy doesn't recognise it officially. But since most cops don't seem to know this and there is no border any more...

Returning to the EU (except maybe Italy) also no problem, but as far as I know he's not allowed to ride in Germany longer than a short time (ask at the German rego office about this.).

Be careful - France doesn't recognise German transit plates either ... don't get stopped by the gendarmes

Custom of port

Hello and thanks for the answering. Our plan is to ship the bikes from Genoa to Port Tunis. I want to put the both our bikes to the ferry. My friend will be waiting me in Port Tunis. But there is a problem. How can I get in Tunis with two bikes? The one is my own should be ok. But the other bike is not mine. What the custom will say?? Can I export this bike (not mine)from EU and import it into the Tunis? I understand you should be a customs officer to answer on these questions. But I do not know where I can ask about it any more.

Try the Tunisian embassy. Also, the ADAC in Germany should know. ADAC - Ihr Partner in allen Fragen rund um die Mobilität. (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) - Mitgliedschaft - Pannenhilfe - Routenplaner - Tests - Versicherungen - Kreditkarten - Finanzierungen - Autovermietung

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
