Renewing International Driving Permit

As we know, an IDP (I get mine from the UK) is good for one year.

But how to renew when the year is up? OK, the obvious answer is "fill in the form, send your money, wait for it to arrive. But on the road, planning to be in Tamanrasset, Tangier, Taejon or Talahassee on such and such a date, to look for a letter that might or might not have arrived isn't always easy. (I remember using "Poste Restante", with outcomes that varied.)

So is there a way round this? How do you get your new IDP if you're on the road?

I don't recall needing to be in person to order one. Just fill out the form online (presumably possible as you've posted the message on the HUBB!!) and post in.

Then ask it to be recorded delivered to somewhere en route.

In Australia, they told me to fill out a spare form and staple a photo to it and give it too someone to arrange for you when you require it. Then send it over to you or you could pay a fee to get them to send it to you.

Just a thought, I have always bought my IDLs from the main Post Office in Dundee (not all POs stock them) and each time they have asked me where I want it to cover and when I want it to start. The maximum time I have post dated one has been 2 months so It may be possible to buy 2 and post date 1 to commence when the first expires. Might work, at least you can smile sweetly when you ask. Ride safe.

Hi

Just picked up on this thread re. IDP renewal/issue when you are on the road.

If you hold a UK licence & I/RAC are co-ordinating your carnet re-issue over a period of 2/3 years, I can hold spare photographs/licence/passport copy on file so as to avoid cost of sending a photograph by secure mail from overseas.

We would send new carnet and/or IDP by courier to await collection from a hotel or from DHL office.

RAC will issue an IDP up to 3 months in advance of start date.

I bought my IDP from the Post Office. Do they offer a similar service of holding copies of photos and UK driving licenses?

Thanks, Ollie

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
