re-do on Mexican TC?

Hola from La Paz!

I am waiting to catch a ferry out of here, but reading over some of the requirements in archives, I have read that your TC (tourist card) needs to be "Final Destination- somewhere mainland Mexico"

I didn't know this at the time and my TC is set for San Felipe.

Is this a big problem, little problem, or not a problem? Any ideas on how to fix? I'll hit the terminal and offices tomorrow (3 Oct 2007) and see what happens.

Muchos gracias,

Mitch Rivest

Mitch,
Are you talking about the Tarjeta de Turismo you paid $20 for? Or are you talking about your vehicle import permit that you paid $37 for?

The Tarjeta is totally not a problem....in fact you don't even need one in Baja unless you: Go south of Guerrero Negro and stay longer than 7 days. I've made many Baja trips never buying the Tourist card (going around the checkpoint in the dirt. On the mainland you may be asked for it at checkpoints.

The bike is another matter. You should have a vehicle import permit and with it a Turista sticker for your bike....but don't put it on....someone will steal it, just keep it with you.

You only need the vehicle permit if you're going to mainland Mex on Ferry or by land. Sonora state (like Baja) is exempt, which almost no one knows.

So the final destination means nothing. Don't worry.

final destination

This is one of those weird bureaucratic rules - a space on a form to fill in. Just as now going into the USA they want to know what hotel you are going to stay at as if you are going to travel several weeks and stay at the same hotel ,duh...
As Pat sez, it doesn't mean much . But there may be a catch as if when you tell them you are going to Central America .This means you could be classed as a transit which has other rules. Do not tell them even if that is the case. Just pick a town , any town ,on your route or the last town you will visit in Mexico and put that on the form and you will be ready.
As for stolen stickers, I don't see that as a problem, have never had one go astray from the bikes in 30 years. I just put the new ones in the same spot where the removed cancelled stickers were . If you carry them in your note book or elswhere there is probably a bigger chance of loosing them.

The reason I said don't put it on is because a couple of Mex Aduana guys suggested not to. They said Mexicans will steal it (mostly near the border) so they can drive around in their American sourced car without being hassled.
You see Thousands of US plated cars in Mexican border areas....most with expired US registration and NONE are legally in Mexico. Very common. The Turista sticker only works for them is they don't get pulled over. If they get pulled over...its a $20 to $30 bribe to continue.

But now that I think about it.....DO use the sticker. WHY? It means when you approach most check points they will SEE the Turista sticker and wave you right through. They mostly do this anyway, but the sticker lets them know right away you are legal. Just one less thing to hassle you about.

From now on the Sticker goes on!!

Thanks for the replies. It turns out it was a total non-event.

English speaking folks directed me to the Bancjercito where I showed passport, DL, TC, and vehicle reg. They needed a phtocopy of each and I had copies of everything except the passport, which I could do 2 doors over in the terminal building.

Then bought my ticket from the nice lady behind a counter in a separate building.

I leave tomorrow for Tobolobompo on a 4 PM departure. Sweet!

Cheers,
Mitch

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
