Q plate bike for RTW???

Hey guys

I wondered if anyone has ever taken a Q plate bike round the world and what, if any difficulties with border crossings, carnet, etc you have experienced.

I have a great DR350 which I had my heart set on to take round the world. It was stolen and recovered and I am dealing with the paperwork to get it registered into my name put it looks like it may need to be given a Q plate.

As you can imagine, the DVLA are pretty non-committal in their knowledge or advice.

Cheers
Char

Smile Q Plate ?

Hello Charlotte,

believe me, no border guard or policeman outside the UK will know what a Q plate is. If it looks like a real numberplate (I mean if it is made of plastic or metal and it has some numbers and or letters on) you will have no problems. But you will need a carnet, and I dont know if you can get this with your Q plate. And of course you will need some kind of rego paper, but I guess that comes with the Q plate.

What is a Q plate ?

Greetings from Switzerland

normally a recovered stolen or accident damaged bike that cannot prove the year that it was made sometimes due to vin / engine number being destroyed. Have seen plenty of cars but not many bikes like this.

I cannot imagine there being a problem as long as the V5 Document corresponds to the bikes details.

Just do it!

Q R A B or X .. I don't know what they mean .. nor do I care .. no cop here or eleswhere will care either .. they may check teh engine/frame nos .. but usually the V%/rego documents will be all they could desire- they'd get dirty looking for the numbers ..

I've been told that NSW plates from here confuse the hell out of 'mericans ... they try to make some USA state out of those letters ..

I've driven many Q plated trucks around in Africa and Asia, never had a problem with it.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
