Hi folks ,

newbie here , im sortng out my plans for a ride from new york to Ushia then onto Brazil then home . I know i dont need a carnet to travle s.america but what WOULD i need to make sure of a smoothish (as it can be) progression through the americas.

The things im most up and down on are ..Insurance....visas???? and time limits id have along the way .....if anyone could point me in the right direction id be most grateful.

Doesn't do any good to try to arrange anything past Mexico in advance. Visas need to be used quickly, and they're either not required or can be bought at borders or in neighboring capitals. Mexico aside, you can't buy insurance or fill out border paperwork until you arrive at an actual border. Besides, you've got no idea in the world where you're going or when....although this might not be apparent just yet.

The right direction is to either search here exhaustively, lurk here methodically, or (preferably) both. There are no better overlanding sites.

For the very basic overview, check the State Department site, which gives visa requirements for all the countries. However, don't look at the travel advisories or you'll give up, bolt the door and never leave home.

Hope that helps.

Visas & Insurance

If you are a British passport holder then three month visas are issued at the border of Central & South American countries. If your shipping your bike to the USA get insurance for the States at Motorcycle Express - Ship Your Bike. If your buying a bike in the USA any US insurance company can supply. I'm in the USA now and heading the same way. From what I gather you get compulsory insurance for other countries at the border though some may not bother with insurance formalities.

If you mean Ushuaia, S. America, it would help when searching for info etc, to understand the correct spelling and therefore the pronunciation.:smartass:Otherwise you may get the wrong info....
