Pakistan visa - help requested!

I'm planning an overland trip from Australia to the UK starting at the end of December. I'm trying to get a Pakistan visa in advance, but the Pakistan High Commission in Canberra wants the name of a contact in Pakistan, e.g., a letter from a tour operator.

Obviously, I don't have this... What's the best way to get a Pakistan visa? Do I need to book something in Pakistan already, or can I get the visa en route (the guy at the High Commission told me they only issue visas in your home country).

Anyone else tackled this problem successfully?

Rob

you could try in KL but don't bother in Bangkok as you need to be a Thai resident or working there to get a visa. I got mine in Kathmandu in a couple of days no problems. As a UK citizen, I had to get an expensive 4 line letter from the UK consulate saying they had no objections to me applying for a Pakistan visa. I didn't need to have anywhere booked when applying.

When you enter Pakistan, they ask you where you'll be staying on the first night. They weren't happy when I said I didn't have anywhere in mind (mainly because I didn't have a guide book) but if you're going to Lahore first, just say you'll be staying at the 'Regal Internet'.

We are shipping to India in Jan 2009 and heading back to UK from there. Will get the Indian visa in Aus, but plan to get the Pakistan visa either in New Delhi or Kathmandu as it sounds much easier....

Thanks!

Thanks guys! Sounds like the best approach to Pakistan is to get the visa on the road. For Iran, I'm planning to get a code from iranianvisa.com and pick up a visa in India.

Mike - awesome blog! I'm planning a very similar route starting in Melbourne at the end of December. Your blog has given me plenty of ideas and confidence, and it's a good read too! I may be hitting you up for more advice if that's OK.

Moodoo - sounds like I'll be chasing you all the way to the UK, because I'm planning to ride up through Australia and SE Asia, so I won't be flying into India / Nepal until March! I'm interested to hear more about your plans though.

Hey Rob

Interested in what the final answer is. Is it possible to get a Pakistani Visa in New Dehli? Can anyone confirm?
Not sure if we will be going to Kathmandu/Nepal so would like to know if its doable in India...
We may go through Bangladesh. Anyone know if its easier or possible to get a Pakistani Visa in Bangladesh?

How long does it take get the Visa?

Only took me 2 days to get it in Kathmandu, not sure about Dehli though. Was $72 I think.

Same question for going in the other direction.

Sorry if this has been asked before, however....
Hoping to overland from UK to OZ . Regarding Iran and Pakistan visa's, do I need to apply before I leave the UK, and pick them up on route, or can the whole process be done on route, somewhere like Turkey??
Thanks for any help, Lee.
P.S. Visa req'd for India??
P.P.S. Anyone been through P'Stan recently?? Would be interested in their experiences.
