Oh Canada *$@#!
I have a big problem.

I have just found out that the KTM that I bought in Australia 5 months ago cannot legally be brought into Canada. This means that I will soon have a slightly used 2001 KTM Adventure arriving in Vancouver that will probably have to be sent back to Australia.

I have been told by Canadian Customs that no motorcycle manufactured for an Australia market within the last 15 years can be brought in. It could if it was manufactured as a racebike however it isn't classified by KTM as a racebike and I don't know of any other 'creative' channels that I would be able to bring the bike in.
Does anyone have experience in this matter. I am open to all kinds of ideas.

ps. if there is anyone in Vancouver harbour looking for a mooring anchor I have just the thing!!

I dont know that I have any earth shattering info to pass on except, if you don't already have something on paper from Customs, I'd ask for it, or as a minimum a second opinion.


I brought a norton back from the UK, in 75, yeah, long ago, and I had no problem.


I would get a second and third opinion.

I have been asking around. I have contacted several people including a dealer that has imported KTMs from Austria and the news hasn't been encouraging at all. Stay tuned I am getting creative/desperate.

You don't happen to have a boat do you?

If you had imported an engine, a frame and some accessory other bits (in separate packages ..) it would have been a different story, of course. That way you can get it past customs.

GOOD NEWS

I am in. Well sort of. The bike made it, however I will never do that again. If you want details of how to get a bike into this country, look to the stars.
Now how in the heck am I going to register this thing??

Am confused. . . . what made the bike unacceptable???? And is it any Australian bike??? What about our Japanese but Australian assembled and purchased Honda Shadow 600's?? Or is it just if you are travelling without a carnet and want to keep the bike in Canada forever???

NO worries for you folks since you will only be passing through.

The problem is PERMANENT IMPORTATION of the bike. And this is ALWAYS a problem in most countries of the world. PERMANENT IMPORTATION into Australia is a huge hassle too, it's not just Canada. USA is worse - don't even THINK about selling the bike in the US when talking to the customs guys - or for that matter in ANY country.

The rule for travelling with a bike is simple - you WILL be returning HOME with it. Period.

If a carnet is needed for a particular country, get it, otherwise entry is normally just fill in a form or two and sometimes pay a small fee. In Canada and the US it's easy and straightforward.

hey folks

ok i know this thread is 8 years old but i need to find out if its possible

i'm working in australia and i am looking at buying a ktm 640 here and when i go home to canada i want to ship it over and keep it there.
all the research i have done says it cant be done.

any body got ideas
possible ways
a letter of compliance from ktm stating the bike conforms to canadian standards

in peices a boneyard of ktm parts.

through the usa once registered in the us it comforms to usa standards and there fore can be shipped into canada..

any help....

Sorry but the best advice is don't. The rules will allow you to bring it in however you cannot register it in Canada once you get it here.
