Non Resident Carnet question
 

Hi all. This is my first post, but have been browsing for many months. Starting a RTW trip with partner next year. We have many questions but for now here's a curly one. Our plan is to purchase a new BMW either in Germany or England and kit it out. How do we get a carnet in either country to travel internationally without having to fly back to Australia with all our details to organise one? We are expecting to be on a two year adventure so we have no set plans or time frames, neither do we want any. We have a friend in Manchester that we could use as a mailing address, but as non residents it seems we can't get a carnet? True or false?

Get the Carnet from the country the bike is registered in. If its the UK, you can buy insurance to cover the carnet rather than stumping up the cash.
I think its ten% of the carnet value and you get 50% of the premium back when the carnet is returned.

I think your comment: "but as non residents it seems we can't get a carnet?" is not correct, otherwise known as bollocks.

If you can provide an address to which the bike is registered and you can get mail there, you are resident, no?:-)) you are good to go. The carnet is only available through the RAC

we have walked that route, and what you really need to find out is where can you register the bike as a non resident, forget about Germany, although the BMW are the cheapest in EU over there, you cannot register the bike in Germany, you have to be a resident for at list 6 month in Germany for that, so the possibility of adac is a no good because they dont issue carnet for non german bikes...
i dont know about the u.k... but we faced the same things and choose to buy the bike in the usa... it is cheaper, no problems to register and the carnet is from caa (the Canadian automobile association).

The ADAC issued a carnet for my French registered bike, no questions asked. However, I am a German citizen and, probably more importantly, have a German bank account. This is important for the deposit refund.

You can register the bike in Germany on the infamous "export plates" for 12 months. I'm sure the ADAC will issue a carnet for this, but it is more expensive.

Email your questions regarding this to carnetdepassages at adac.de.

Search HUBB for eport plates, there are issues with them, as some countries don't accept them. The ADAC also knows about that.

In the Netherlands the carnet was issued by the ANWB (the dutch AA), but since september 2005 this 'service' is now done by it's german sister-organisation ADAC.
So you're not obliged to get it in the country where your vehicle is registered or where you live (otherwise we dutch would not be able get one anymore!). The pages concerning the carnet are in English, Français and offcouse german, lots of information/fees etc.

Found on their pages (a doc. showing where carnets 'officially' are required) although it seems to be a bit outdated.

Perform a search for info about registrating a vehicle for non-residents in different european countries, there are a few threads with info but quite contradictory.
