No vehicle insurance - legal in SA?

Hi all,
In a weeks time I'm going to SA to buy a bike and travel back to the UK. Up till now I haven't really thought about vehicle insurance. Ideally I'd like to follow the advice Werner and Susan gave in a previous post and totally ignore vehicle insurance. But is this legal in SA? Throughout the rest of Africa I plan to buy insurance at borders only when made to but is it legal not to have at least third party insurance in SA? Thanks for any help,

Jasper

Hi Jasper, as far as I know it's not compulsory to have insurance in SA.

How does one go about registering a vehicle in a country where you are not a resident?

Thanks

Paul

Hi,

I travelled a lot in SA about 13 years ago. At that time insurance for 'damage' to people (is there an english word for this?)was part of the petrol price. All the rest has to be insured seperately, but was not compulsary (but advisable, since - on paper at least - this covers less than the compulsary insurance you buy at the borders in other African countries).

Peter
