Is it possible to get a Carte Brune before you get to Senegal?

I heard from several people that you can get a Carte Brune in Saint Louis in Senegal, but you still need to pay for insurance at the border just to get as far as Saint Louis. Is it not possible to get hold of this before Senegal to save wasting money on insurance between the border and the town?

Cheers.

I glanced at that and read

"Is it possible to get Carla Bruni before you get to Senegal?"

No help at all in answering your question, but

a) it put a big smile on my face and
b) at least I've bumped you to the top of the message board. Hope someone else can help..

You can get insurance covering all West sub-saharan Africa (Senegal Mali, BF, etc) at Diamma and at the Mauretania border with Maroc. Don't think sadly you can get Mrs Sarkozy though......

We were very tempted to get insurance before the border with Senegal for the reason you stated and we'd been told that the first Senegal police stop asks to see your insurance... which he did!

However, we went to two different insurance places when we were in Mauritania and got quotes. The second insurance company told us that it was very highly priced as it was not for the country we were in and that we would be better off buying it in Senegal!! As both quotes were very high we decided to see what it was like at the border... in case anyone's interested it was over 230 Euros for a Unimog for 3 months covering most of West Africa.

We arrived at Diama and saw the nice lady behind the customs office on the Senegal side and bought exactly the same insurance for 90 Euros - remember this is a Unimog and for 3 months.

Hope this helps

Be carefull!!!

Make sure your insurance has all the parts to it. Cant remember what they are but someone will know. Some people have bought insurance before Senegal andhave been conned!
Dont buy it at the morroc/maui border as that is where my friend got ripped off.
YOU WILL BE STOPPED BETWEEN THE BORDER TO ST LOUIS!!! and they will try fine you for anything!!!! No stress, they are just full of sh...t.
I bought mine at the border on the senegsl side close to St Louis, (not Rosso) It was a little expensive as compared to an agent at St Louis but at least I did not have to pay a little bribe.
hope that helps!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
