Motorcycle Reg in EU for an Australian
 

I've been travelling through Europe, and I've met a Dutch guy who wants to sell me his Yam FJ600, which is registered in The Netherlands.

I have an Australian license, and I'm currently in Estonia.

I also have a 2 year working visa in The UK, so I think registering it there would be the best course of action.

Does anyone know if I can complete the bureaucratic requirements from here, or would I have to take the bike back to the UK to register it to an address there?

Or is it possible to register a bike in The EU without a permanent address?

I'd rather not travel all the way back to the UK just to register this bike.

I can't seem to find any other threads that cover this topic, and finding the right web page with this info is like finding a needle in a haystack!

I appreciate your help.

after which you may conclude that it can be done, provided that you put in the leg work in dealing with the bureaucracy - it may be easier (much easier?) to make the purchase via the home country of the seller; then export it again, to the UK or elsewhere, if that is really necessary.
In other words, if this guy is really interested in selling to you then he should assist with the paperwork.

I am from Aus and have a bike in the Netherlands. My wife is Dutch but no longer lives there. We could not register the bike in either of our names as we did not have a permanent address and we were not registered with the Gemeentehuis (council) so we had to put it in my mother-in-law's name. I would have thought that the real problem would be getting insurance. Which is a pain in the ass in the UK for an Australian. Speaking from experience...

Your best bet may be to try the Netherlands.

Buying the bike and transferring the bike is never the hard part - insurance is the hard part. Call up insurance companies in the Netherlands and see if you can get insurance as a non-Dutch resident with only your Aussie license first.

You can get cheap EU green cards from Doug who runs the Motosapiens moto camp in Bulgaria that will cover you for europe - if you are happy to get by on only 3rd party insurance. You can only buy 3 months at a time though. Google motosapiens and his details will come up. He was doing them for others when I popped through there a couple of months back.

I can understand why you say what you say, but the links within the links of my earlier post in this thread show that it can be done in the UK; here it has become a very, very automated system, all based on computer records with little to no input from human beings - the net result is that you get automotons on the phones who deal with queries in accordance with their company policy and flowsheet of questions and answers, all for a daily rate of minimum wage (so why should they care??).
As I understand things here for anyone from overseas, the basic problem still comes down to getting a vehicle registered in your name with a UK address - thereafter, all things are possible (see the links I identify & the stickies in this forum - this has been discussed ad infinitum).

It can be done, yes. I have done it myself.

It is not easy. The 3rd party insurance that you are talking about through Knopf tours is only for countries excluding the country that the bike is registered in. So if you by a bike in the UK you must still get UK 3rd party insurance to cover it in the UK. To get that insurance you MUST have a British license and to get the British license you must have either a British passport or a work permit. Plus the process of getting the license/buying and registering the bike, insuring the bike and takes min 4-6 weeks - making it infeasible for a trip of less than 6 months.

If anyone can find a British insurer that will insure a bike for someone with a non-EU license for less than 1/4 of the value of the bike, per annum... I will ride to their house when I get back to the UK in November and buy them a beer!
