Motorcycle insurance for South Africa

My UK company, Norwich Union, has refused to provide cover for South Africa, so I need to find an alternative company to quote me. Does anyone know any SA insurance company that will provide cover for a UK registered bike, or even any way to resolve this problem? Replies greatly appreciated as tickets are booked to start my tour in Cape Town on 28 Feb.

Try the following company:

Worldwide Broker Network: 75 Cannon Street, London, EC4N 5BN, England
Telephone: 44 (0)20 7556 7032 | | Telefax: 44 (0)20 7556 7518

They are affiliated with a south african insurance firm called Glenrand MIB who I have used for a number of years and are reputable.

MIB's info is:

Hi Chris,

If you ride a BMW, then you should approach BMW South Africa for insurance. I have found their service very agreeable. I am not sure if they will specifically cover a UK registered bike, but they may prove flexible.

As far as I know, insurance is not mandatory for travellers (it's not for locals)... so it may not be critical.

You may want to contact Neil at Auto Atlantic (the Cape Town BMW dealership - [021] 4095831) for further information - again, I assume you travel by BMW bike.

Motorcycles are generally difficult to insure in this country, but someone somewhere will surely underwrite your bike.

You can also try www.autoandgeneral.co.za

Good luck!

Thanks for the info, Bernard. My bike is a BMW K75S, so I will followm your suggestion and contact the Cape Town BMW dealership, and your other reference. I thought it might be worthwhile also to contact the AA of SA, for membership and also for contacts they may have with insurers. I may decide to keep the bike in SA as I own a house in Knysna, which I shall be heading for after touring the Cape Winelands.
