what documentation is it advisable to take touring?

i'm already taking driving license, IDP, vehicle registration...

how about MOT cert?

Hi, again...

Assuming the V5C is in your name, matching your Passport, apart from Insurance which can be bought en-route (sometimes only obtainable locally as not all countries subscribe to the Green Card scheme), that's all you need take from home for the vehicle.

Some will tell you you need an MOT and Road Tax, but my past and recent reading of UK Acts of Parliament, SIs and International Treaties is that this is purely a local matter for a UK registered vehicle being used on within UK - just like Road Tax, which is ONLY required when using it on Public Roads in UK as defined in the Acts There are 3 separate definitions for England/Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland; anywhere else is not within the 'tight' definitions does not require Road Tax whether it be a UK farmers private access track or a vague route across the Gobi (or even Heathrow Airport, within which the roads are private!!!!!)

But, if the vehicle has no Road Tax it should be declared SORN. This is the Catch 22, as the SORN legislation requires it to still be within the UK. DVLA used to include this condition in their advice/notification documentation but, having recently acknowleged the anomoly, I notice they have quietly dropped that bit from their forms!

The whole thread is worth reading if you are concerned and planning a long trip.
Reading through it shows how far DVLA is out of its depth, telling different people (including Paul Gowan of RAC) different things by phone, Email and letter then retracting them, eventually admitting the mess but still offering no solution!
The girl I mentioned as an example, and in a non-update in post 93, still has her car outside UK 3 years on. It is still happily rfairly regularly accepted into and out of Russia and neighbouring EU states with the V5C.

This post again reopens a regular can of worms within HUBB, with strong replies from some who sadly still don't provide legislation references in support.

it's going straight to the back drawer of my brain labelled 'things to worry about some other time'.

no-one at the end of the phone ever really knows anything... working in a call centre is the easiest way off the dole, you don't have to know your stuff.

it may be prudent to scan all your paperwork and email to your self and keep it safe in a folder within your email. Then if the paperwork is lost damaged or water logged then at least you have some reference point to start from.
