Moroccan visa for South African passport holders travelling overland?

Hi folks

Does anyone have experience getting into Morocco with a South African passport when travelling overland?

South Africans aren't Morocco's favourite tourists (since South Africa supported the Sahwari in their claim to autonomous rule in the Western Sahara, which Morocco didn't appreciate!), and as such it is rather difficult for South Africans to get visas for Morocco.

As you can see here, original proof of travel and accommodation is required. Since we aim to enter via Cueta, and depart via Mauritania, our travel proof is non-existent.

Accommodation proof is also non-existent - we would like to be camping or finding hotels en-route when so desired.

Is it possible to obtain a visa at the border with a South African passport?
If not, is it possible to obtain a visa beforehand without having proof of travel (or would a carnet be sufficient)?

Does anyone have any advice on this please?

Thanks
Steve

Moroccan visa

Hi Steve

I traveled with my brother down the africa west coast recently. He was on an SA passport, and boy was it pain.

You have to get the visa prior to travel, they insist that you apply from the country in which you are normally resident. As we had missed that little note and my brother was flying out in 2d he had to rush up to PTA and get the visa on christmas eve. They would then only give him a 2week visa saying he could extend this when in Morocco.
2 weeks in Morocco is no where near enough time so we attempted to get it extended in Rabat ( ended up with some oaf who would not extend the visa saying 2 wks was more than enough time).
It was suggested by one of his underlings as we left to try all the police stations on the way through to get an extension. This we did again to no avail.
We did meet a couple of guys who though not resident in the uk did manage to get their visa in london.

Hope this helps
Cheers
Patrick
PS any other queries please don't hesitate to contact me. I am in the process of putting all the visa details for SA and British citizens onto a page on my website Welcome, though this may still take some time.
