Malaysia without Carnet

I am in india on a bullet and i intend to head towards south east asia. Trouble is i have no carnet nor do i plan to go through the hassle of getting one. Once i get to thailand there are no problems, but my question is about malaysia: is a carnet necessary in malaysia? anybody has any experience in riding through without one? i would appreciate any information.

Thanks a lot,
s

Hi,

According to information supplied by AA of Malaysia, private vehicles (motorcycle/car) may be temporarily imported into Malaysia without formality for 3 months, under an undertaking to re-export them.

A carnet is not essential but may help with Customs clearance.

Trust this is of guidance.

Hi S,
I went through Malaysia in October 2002 once from Thailand, then from Singapore. No carnet was asked for. However, I was asked for a carnet for Singapore among other things, like insurance, and other permits, all available at the border at a price (take taxi to downtown).

Hi,
we went to Malaysia on the 10th ofJanuary with our 2 Tenere and we still in this country. Wehave a Carnet and we used it.But nobody was asking for it. It is absolutly no problem to comeinto the country without a Carnet. You really need it for Singapore but not for Maslaysia. For further information just send ae-mail.We are two germans and you can write in german.
Have a good trip and maybe see you on the road.

thanks a lot guys. It seems taht my chances are increasing. I have checked on the net and it seems that malaysia is indeed a carnet-requiring country, but it seems that by travelling overland they don't bother. i hope it will be the same if i'll ship the bike (as there seems to be no ferry from india or sri-lanka).
I'll see.
Volker und kerstin: vielen dank und es kann sein das ich euchh kontaktieren werde mit mehr fragen. vielleicht treffen wir uns auf ein tee in malaesien.

Anyone know if this is still true?

I am being kicked out of Thailand (I wont go into details) and do not have the time to purchase a new Carnet before I have to leave.

Thanks,
Ol
