I suggest you ask HU Communities in the regions where you want to leave your bike and see if there is someone who has a garage available for storage of your bike & gear until you come back.

Aye, and another factor to consider is the countries in South America which have the temporary import process which limits your bikes stay to the duration of the permit. In places such as Argentina, if you overstay your permit it can be difficult and expensive to get out of the country.

There is plenty of info here on people's experiences in different countries in SA, try to search function here or if you use google and specify the horizons unlimited site in your search parameters you will get a boatload of info to read and from there can ask further specific questions. Happy planning.

Thumbs up

I feel your pain, 'fatpaw'. Most of us in North America only get 2 or 3 weeks of vacation, so it's an even bigger problem for us.

Maybe the best solution is to try and find a 'motorcycle penpal' in a country you're interested in, and then use them as a base. As others have wrote, though, you're always going to have problems with import restrictions.

You could find such a buddy and buy a cheap used bike in that country, keep it safe at their place, and let 'buddy' use it when you are not in country. I am thinking of doing something similar, though I'm not sure how to go about arranging it.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
