Question How to get your own bike on foreign roads?

Hello all,

I am wanting to confirm the complete process of shipping a motorcycle abroad, and then being able to ride it on foreign roads.
I assume once the bike arrives, you go to the overseas dock and then unload the bike and then go through customs, where all paperwork is checked carnet etc, but from here i am unsure, what else is needed to get the bike on the foreign road,
>Can it all be done at customs and ride out of the dock?
>or do you need to organise registration prior or after the bike is out of customs?
>Do you require new number plates and register the bike in each country you pass (as a temporary import)?
>or do you keep your own countries number plates displayed?

the bike will be Australian registered, and most likely shipped to a port in India, and then progress west on road.

any help is much appreciated.

If you're on a carnet then you keep the plates on it, I think also with a temporary import permit you keep your foreign plates (certainly true for Africa).

You'll need to put some petrol in it, shipping companies don't like shipping or handling bikes full of fuel

You'll need insurance and they may need some sort of tax off you, but they will tell you about this at the port if you can't find out in advance

""the bike will be Australian registered, and most likely shipped to a port in India, and then progress west on road.""

Here is the link to information and photos how it was done in India in April-2011.

Many photocopies, stamps, teas, waitings and waitings until the officier tells what the next step will be.You will follow the instructions and will be told how and where to do the next procedure.(ATTENTION-Keep away those unofficial people who offers help)

Same in Turkey, too. Additionally, you must buy your insurance, your Turkish tax number(Which is also your permanent citizenship number) and police clearing report for the past 10 years before going to customs.

Entering and exiting Turkish land bordergates by bikes more simple...If you need more information for Turkey, don't hesitate to send us your questions..

Wish you all the best.
zeki.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
