Latest Information needed about Iranian Carnet

Hello,
I was pretty sure a CDP was required for Iran but in this post http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...fusion-40856-3 a proverbial spanner was thrown into the works when a few people claimed you could get a local Carnet at the border. Have there been any recent confirmations of this?

Thanks,
Kurt

I entered Iran a couple weeks ago with a carnet. No hassles at all. At the exit they didn't really seem to know what to do with it but it all got sorted in the end.

When I entered there was a guy there who didn't have a carnet for his car. He had to leave €37000 in cash at the border before they would let it in. I left before he got everything sorted but once he provided the money I think he didn't have any more problems. When he turned up the first time he didn't have the money so he had to leave the car at the border, get a taxi into Tehran and return a few days later with a very fat wallet.

But personally I would not want to leave that much money at the border. I wouldn't trust the border guards or government of any country with it. There is even less chance of getting it back when you leave than getting a refund from the RAC.

So yes, you can do it. But I think you would be wise to get a carnet, even though it is a massive pain.

37000€ left as deposit at the border?? I hope that he'll see that money again!

I don't think the carnet is really a massive pain to get. If you're only gonna need it for Iran, then I know it's tempting to try going without, but if you're heading to Pakistan & India, then it will be required without exceptions.

Yeah it's not really a pain to get a carnet or use it, it just yet more paperwork to deal with. Also I object to carrying around a piece of paper that is worth very nearly as much as the bike.

But all things considered it is a better option than leaving thousands at the border.

Thanks Prisoner. That's some pretty solid information regarding the risks of going it without a CDP.

So get a load of this: just got an email from the tour agency I got my iranian visa through:

" It seems that they change the rules and you should go to Iranian embassy to get the CDP and they don’t give this document for Motorbike at the boundary."

Makes for some pretty interesting reading.
