Laos - carnet yes or no?
 

I'm trying to find out if Laos requires a carnet or not. The border crossing Excel list has 3 different crossings, 2 with and one without. Obviously people are getting in no problem ... but CAA here in Canada can't put Laos on my carnet. What's the scoop? Do I need a carnet for Laos or not?

hi, just sent off my carnet application today for my ride from the uk to oz. was told buy the carnet people (the r.a.c) here in the uk that you only need a carnet for thailand, malaysia, indonesia and oz in that area. other countries dont recognise it. cost of the carnet for the area is 200% of the value of your bike which we have bought an insurance indemnity to cover the cost.

Seems your cost is a lot higher than mine ... I only need to py $5,000 CAD as a guarantee. Even with all those countries on it ... Not sure why mine is cheaper...

sorry mate i didn't tell the full story, my bike is worth 1000 pounds so i have to pay 2000 pounds which is 200% of the value of the bike.but with my insurance indemnity i only have to pay 10% of the cost, so i only actualy pay 200 pounds and half of that i get back on my return. if you need the insurance company number in london i'll gladly give you it. not sure if they can help you out being that your in canada but it might be worth a try.

Laos does not officially accept the carnet, however they accepted mine and stamped it at the border near Vientiane. Another overland biker came through and had his carnet stamped also. The carnet will probably be the most efficient way to get into Laos, at least at the border crossing near Vientiane.
