Is insurance required in South America?

Does anyone know if insurance us required to ride a motorbike in any South American countries?

hola,

by law you must have insurance in most (maybe all) South American countries. Read other threads, what travellers do.

I've read several claims that vehicle insurance is NOT required or checked for in the vast majority of SA countries. I'm sure I've read remarks by Greg Frazier that on his moto-trips to South America he's never been asked for insurance paperwork anywhere, only vehicle registration papers.

You do by law have to have it, but very difficult to get it, we spent 6 months without it, when asked, offered UK insurance or A N Other document. It is possible to get cover though. In Arg via Mapfre (sp) but in Beunos Aires only, in provinces can't offer whole country cover. Try community

can you buy insurance on the border of every south american country? ecuador, peru, bolivia, chile..?
