Indian multiple entry visa

Can anybody tell me the current situation reguarding Indian multiple entry visas. I am off there for three months and hope to go to Sri Lanka for a couple of weeks during that visit, from what I gather you have to leave India 15 days after re-entry on a multiple entry but information is a little vague and what is on here about a year old so anybody's recent experence would be useful.

Don't know if this is the latest position but this is what it says on my last multiple entry tourist visa (exp Aug 2010)

There should be a gap of at least 2 months between 2 visits to the country on a Tourist Visa. In case of requirement to visit the country within 2 months, permission should be sought from the Head of Mission concerned indicating the specific reasons for another visit within a short period. In all such cases, registration would be required within 14 days of arrival.

Someone else may have more up-to-date info, as the info on visas is different for everyone I have.

Hi,

Both times I applied (at VFS in London) in the last two years I had to write a letter to the High Commissioner of India to accompany my application saying that I would like a visa which allowed me to visit Nepal/Bhutan/Bangladesh (as appropriate) for a few days each. In both cases I had to invent some itinerary for my visits. In the one case they sent me over the road to a travel agents for an "official" itinerary -- bizarrely involving flights despite me being on a motorbike -- to supplement the application. A £10 scam.

When they grant you this your visa is stamped "RE-ENTRY FROM BANGLADESH, NEPAL, BHUTAN" (as appropriate). This "re-entry" allows you to side-step the two months nonsense.

In neither case were the dates for the other countries mentioned on the visa, it was a blanket re-entry allowance.

I was stymied in the first case because I put down a request to visit Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh but then they noticed I'd be coming from Pakistan which meant four entries into India which was, apparently, one too many. Go figure.

Cheers,

Ian

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
