Insurance (the complete package)

I'm a UK resident and planning a tour leaving June 2006 from the UK to Australia. I realise that the complete insurance package is not possible (due to problems of availability and price) but I am interested in finding out how much I can get. Can anyone give me any information about the following:

1. Insurance to cover the bike in the event that it is stolen (I haven't yet heard of anywhere that will provide worldwide insurance, or even insurance for the specific countries that I will be travelling through). I will be riding a BMW R1200 GS.

2. Third party insurance to cover me in the event that I injure (god forbid!) a third party and / or damage their property (I am finding that you can often purchase this at boarders, but would be very interested to know if there is any global insurance available).

3. Medical insurance which covers me even when riding the bike.

4. Insurance to cover personal items (some high value e.g. cameras and gps).

All answers would be very gratefully received. I would also be interested to hear from anyone who has done a similar trip and how much insurance they travelled with.
Many thanks.
Tom.

Hi Tom,

1. Never heard of a policy that covers you outside of Europe. If you can't afford to loose it I suggest you use a cheaper bike. (I'm not being smart here, it's how I look at my own bike.)

2. Green Card, valid for Turkey and Iran, if you can get it. If you can't, insurance is available at the border. They won't force you tu buy a policy, but I highly recommend it, at least in TR. For the rest of Asia don't bother.

3 & 4. Links on the left, but I'll take out a policy with www.worldnomads.com.

I suggest you read some of the older posts in this forum on these subjects and you will get a fair idea.

Hi,

There is a company called Alessi (I am not sure of the spelling) that sells worldwide liabilety-insurance. I would not get it though, since it is expensive.
In Asia you are better of paying cash to the "victim". Insurance bought at the border usually is worthless for the victim.

For health and personal posessions you can try yoho (www.yoho.nl) They are an expat-insurance company, but they insure also travelers for longer periodes.

Search for "alessi" here in the HUBB. I have mentioned it before.

Maarten
