Insurance riding through Canada from USA
 

I live in Florida and motorcycle insurance is not required here. I want to ride to Alaska and was wondering if motorcycle insurance is required in Canada? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sheeesh, Sasan , where have you been all the time- :scooter: apparently you have never ridden outside Florida in spite of your varied bike ownership as listed on your profile, or else you would have know the answer to this basic question.
By all means go to Alaska but get some insurance to cover your butt for the istant you get sued in Florida or step over into neighbour states, and it is definitely rquired in Canada .
And as to your other post where you state you plan to take 5 to 6 days to ride from Florida to Vancouver !!! puhlease get some more research done and forget about your ironbutting tendency! Are you trying to set some sort of record, or do you want to see and explore the continent

I should rephrase my question. What type of insurance does the Canadian government require for travelers? Liability, full coverage, etc.? Also, is an insurance card enough proof? Another question.....Do you need to carry your motorcycle title with you or is the registration enough? Thanks for all the help though.

Using the province of B.C. as an example:


Mandatory ICBC insurance

• Covers the basic compulsory liability or third party insurance with $200,000 in coverage

Optional insurance

• Excess liability or third party insurance, anything over $200,000 in coverage
• First party insurance for your vehicle including collision and comprehensive

In regards to the documentation requirements for insurance, I'm not sure what is on an insurance card and what isn't (we don't have them here) but since we do have third party minimums, you would want to have enough documentation that would satisfy a police officer if pulled over. I would guess that it can't hurt to have your policy on hand in case you meet an especially daft officer who may be confused by what you hand him.

Title and registration is again something that is handled a bit differently up here, you can't go wrong by bringing both in case asked. The police would likely be satisfied with just the registration and insurance but sometimes customs folks can get worked up about titles.

As to the further question, only LIABILITY insurance is required by law anywhere in CAnada and USA , to protect others in case you are at fault in an accident.The liability insurance card issued in Florida is all you need to carry with you,but you may want to have a list of adjusters you might contact in case of need . There is an agreement between US and Canada to recognize each other's documents as valid.
For the bike all you need to carry is the registration showing the VIN etc .It is presumed that you have the right to be driving it, whether owned or rented ,but not stolen( if it were stolen that would soon enough show up on the police computer I suppose)Besides at the border NOBODY ever asks about insurance and registration, that is only done by police at roadside .
If you wreck the bike it becomes your problem to get it towed, fixed or scrapped , depending on what insurance extra you have

I have progressive insurance on my bike, when I went to Alaska in '09, I contacted them and they sent me a Candaian card for free. You might want to check that out...
