Insurance Required in Moldova and Other Documents?

I am planning on riding from Germany to Chisinau, Moldova in August. My insurance (USAA) covers the motorcycle in Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Romania but not Moldova. What insurance will cover the motorcycle in Moldova? Can insurance be purchased at the border?

What other documents would be required along that route?

I was only transiting so didn't pay that much attention. I did have to change money though and on the border there were cabins with money changers. I'm 99% sure there were insurance tauts too.

If you really want to be safe take out another short term policy in Germany that covers the lot

NearlyHomelessNick,

Good idea. I'll check with a German company for short term insurance.

With that said, yesterday I went by ADAC to get a Vignette for Austria. I asked if ADAC offers motorcycle insurance and the representative stated yes that they do. I asked for a rough estimate of the annual cost. The representative stated that I needed to bring in my registration plus some additional paperwork. I was there with my car so I did not have my motorcycle information with me. I gave her the make, model, and year of my motorcycle but she said that she still couldn't give a rough estimate, stating that it is a very complicated process and all of the additional paperwork is required for her to provide an estimate. I smiled and said "that is typical," she smiled and said "it's complicated, it's Germany." I just laughed and said I will return at a later date with all the required paperwork.

We are likely to Cross Moldavia on our way back to Germany. I am sure you can Buy insurace at the boarder. If not ... I dont care. Crossed Armenia without insurance too.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
