Depends on your citizenship. I assume you're a UK national. You could contact every embassy of the countries you plan to visit (exhaustive process). Check for embassies in the UK here http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?...=1007029396086

I don't know about getting visas at the border. You could apply for a Visa before you leave or you can try the embassies or consulates of the next country to visit, in the neighbouring country. I don't think Central and South America will present obstacles in the form of Visas, so probably you might get the Visa right at the border.

You should have no trouble getting all visas right at the border.

Central/South America countries are all straightforward for paperwork, no visas, no carnets except the usual flying into Argentina and Ecuador exceptions. Some are very slow and a pain in the a** type crossings, some are super easy.

No worries, just go.

Hi, this depends on your nationality. Most Europeans do not need any visas for all countries in Central and South America. Just show your passport, get it stamped and get the immigration card which you should not loose. One exception is Cuba which discovered visa requirement as a money making machine, as the whole tourism in Cuba.
Be aware to leave the country before the normal stay of 3 months or get an extension at Migración or Policia Federal. Have a nice trip!

Hi Merlin,

I will be in Mexico by mid or end of May and I may go to Baja and possibly skip the Copper Canyon, if it is too much north of Mazatlan, where I will join the mainland. If you're in Mexico in that timeframe, I may run into you however.
As for Visas as a money making machine, that is only partially true. Most Visas are implemented so that governments can control more easily who enters the country and for the case with Cuba, it is likely that they have a Visa policy in retaliation for other countries imposing Visas (probably for immigration). I think there is no Visa requirement for Canadians visiting Cuba. For example, some Latin American countries impose Visas on Canadian citizens in retaliation for Canada imposing Visas on them.
However, countries can charge entry fees, regardless of Visa requirements. This is clearly a source of revenue.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
