Insuring US bike in UK and EU

A US friend is shipping his US registered bike over here in late spring intending to tour round the UK and then go over to France and Spain. Shipping is sorted but insurance is proving to be a bit of a problem. That's road insurance for the bike, not travel / health insurance for him.

Anyone know of any companies that'll cover a US visitor? Prior to Brexit one EU wide policy would presumably have done but is that still the case?

Dooby is your man and as far as I am aware Brexit has made no difference to this.

Thanks Mark, I'll follow it up in the morning. I'm not in a huge rush with this as the bike isn't arriving until the end of June and the rider a couple of weeks later but it's best to try and get in front of this stuff. I'll report back how it went in case anyone needs to do the same thing in the future.

How did you get on?

I am currently in Morocco about to head to Spain tomorrow with my South African registered bike and wondering how I can get insured for the UK as well.

Cheers!

The insurance you buy at the Spanish border should come with a Green Card (ask for a paper copy if they don't offer it, it's free), and that should include the UK under a separate EU-UK agreement.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, the insurance I got for Spain doesn't cover the UK. https://assurancefrontier.es/en/

I also contacted mototouring.com and they also said their Greencard insurance doesn't cover the UK.

A bit stuck as have my ferry to the UK booked for Tuesday.

Any more ideas?

Is this your own understanding, or did you get a clear statement to this effect from the company?

Because everything you read online says that the UK is covered by Green Cards under a separate agreement. That website ultimately links through to a site of the Spanish government that has a badly worded (in translation) statement regarding the UK.

In any case, worst case scenario, you rock up at the UK border and ask the nice customs official where you can buy insurance.

Thanks for this, I went with Ivo. 70 euros for 30 days for the green card insurance that includes the UK.

This option doesn’t include the greencard, it’s just an insurance policy. On the document it has list of countries that it covers for. Unfortunately the UK is crossed out on this one.

Managed to get a greencard from Ivo (linked above) so should All be good for my arrival Later today.

Thanks for the help.

Great that Ivo at Motocamp Bulgaria could help you Hopefully others on here can also point the way to him, rather than just me trying to swim against the tide.

It can be a pita that a recommendation of the straight away place to go to is regularly drowned out by a deluge of un-useful alternative/ irrelevant suggestions.
