Insurance For Central and South America

Hi,

I'll be leaving for a trip around Central and South America soon and have no insurance in case I get an accident.

From what I have read, most people don't buy insurance that cover accidents. But some buy insurance when crossing borders.

So what is the way to go: Ask at each border to buy insurance in case I get an accident or avoid the subject and only buy insurance when the officer tell me that I can't ride in the country without insurance?

Thanks,

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Ofcourse the choice is up to you.
But...
Insurance in those country,s is expensive.
You might wonder if it works anyway.
Maybe the "victim" is better of if you pay him direct?
You will probebly be the only one who is insured on the road.

But also...
In Mexico you go to jail if you have an acident and no insurance (I heard)
Some country,s ask to see your inurance papers (I tell them a story about obligated worldwide insurance via computers, so I have no paper)

So...
It is up to you to decide.

Maarten

I have avoided looking at insurance for the motos in all countries in which it is not mandatory (if I remember correctly, only Mexico, Belieze, Nic, and Costa Rica made me buy insurance. And probably Honduras too, who knows WHAT I paid for to get out of there). Make sure your regular CAN insurance will take care of you in the U$A.
The other insurance of course is medical for yourself in case you pile into a burro or a bus piles into you. Not pleasant, but it would be worth looking into a medical insurance that will ship you to a first class facility in case of a life threatening injury. Unfortunetly, it can happen.

If you decide to try to get a Central And South American insurance document from Word Perfect Insurance Co http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif be sure to translate it to Spanish, and list all the countries. Putting central and south america alone is not sufficient, as some border gaurds are not up to date on their geography.
Safe travels,
Rene
