Insurance for Australian registered bike in UK - UK resident

Hi all - I've had a search but can't really find an answer on this one.

I've come back from Oz and my australian registered XT has arrived. I'm starting the process of registering it in the UK but that may take a little while. Whilst that's going on I'm wondering if I may be able to find insurance to ride the bike in the UK despite the fact it's still got Australian plates.

I'm sure if I had french plates for example it would be easy enough to find a french company that would insure me - but the whole Australian thing seems WAY more difficult!

Not the end of the world if I can't sort it - but it would be nice to be riding sooner rather than later.

a solution

okay there is a solution to this but only for vehicles that you intend to register properly in the UK.

If you have a foreign plated motorbike (Australian or otherwise) that has just come into the country Carol Nash will insure it using only it's VIN, they'll then give you 28 days to properly register your bike, if it takes longer that's not a problem just give them a call.

So I can, in theory ride around on my Australian registered motorbike whilst it's going through the process of being permanently registered.

Just noticed this, I did the exact same with mine when I got back. Make sure your bike has a 5w running light in the headlight, mine didn't and I had to get one stuck on the front (doesn't actually need to be IN the headlight) for the SVA test. That was the only thing it failed on. My temp insurance ran out after a month and CN extended it for another couple of weeks but wouldn't do more than that.

There is some European wide rule for this I think but you are obliged to change it over after a period of time.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
