Insurance at the border for Israel?

Does anyone know if you need third party/compulsory insurance to drive your car in Israel? If you have a green card that purports to cover Israel is that likely to suffice or are there different/additional local requirements? If something is required can we get it at the border? Any idea of costs?

Thanks a lot

I am also looking for the answer to ItchyFeet's questions above. Does anyone have an idea about how to get car insurance for Israel before getting there. We are traveling north from East Africa, so don't have the option of getting green card insurance in Europe.

Hi Taniya,

If I remember correctly you have been out of the UK for a few years with your car? In which case you probably won't have and won't be able to get UK insurance before you get back to the UK and therefore won't have the option of Green card cover as an "extra". If so, you will be in the same position as we were and will have to buy Green card cover separately before you get to Europe. That being the case you may as well get it before you get to Israel as it can if requested cover Israel (don't ask me why). Otherwise Israeli insurance at the border is very expensive (c. $150 minimum as I recall). You can organise a Green Card remotely - we had it couriered to Amman.

We used Alessie - contact Maria Alessie - alessie@alessie.com.

Cheers,
